Your proposal can be construed as a legally binding contract, so therefore it is of the utmost importance to the health and financial stability of your business, that what you deliver to the client is a product you can live with. Over the years we have seen many different templates that clients use as a proposal, from just a number and job name, to a multi-page detailed one. Each of these have their strengths and weaknesses.
A simplified version with just a job name and a number leaves an easy way out when it comes to the commitment of the proposal, but it leaves you no room for negotiations if you are too high or low, and sometimes can just be thrown out for lack of detail. A detailed proposal covers all of your bases; however, it also can work against you and lock you into commitments that you may not be aware of. Not to mention being too detailed can work against you, as sometimes the client does not want to read through a multi page proposal, as most of the time they are just looking for a number and brief explanation from the sub, that they can compare to other bids they received.
Where is the happy median? That depends on the job and the relationship you have with the client. If you already have a relationship with the client you know what they are looking for, however if you do not, or are bidding a sealed bid, this needs to be structured to gain the interest of the client, and most importantly, protect you.
